On August 25, PLCN member Srey Thei and Hing Ngong from Chey Saen District’s Srae Viel Village, along with CCHR Project coordinator Chhim Savuth and provincial government officers, seized 60 pieces of timber from illegal loggers, who had fled. At least some of the timber was taken to the village for safe storage. Timber that remained in the forest disappeared. PLCN members believe that the loggers returned for it.
Preah Vihear – PLCN Intervenes on a Migrant Settlement and their Logging: A PLCN member Svay Thien from Rovieng District’s Reab Roy Commune reported that 50 migrant families from Kampong Thom had been logging for a plantation at Khbal O’Rolouch in the villages of Chalai Chas and Bangkun. Their logging included resin trees that are illegal to cut in Cambodia. PLCN reported the matter to authorities to take action against the migrants. The commune chief agreed that he would not allow anyone to log in Prey Lang, especially the resin which support local livelihoods. PLCN said that some local authorities, soldiers, police and their families appear to be the main culprits. It is unclear if the commune chief can thwart logging that may involve state actors.
