Two PLCN representatives and one member of the CPN Appeared on RFA

On January 29, two PLCN representatives and one member of the CPN National Working Group appeared on Radio Free Asia to discuss Prey Lang, the draft sub-decree and deforestation in general in Cambodia. The talk show guests sought to raise awareness about the forest and called for a co-management plan between the government and PLCN. Callers to the program were from Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, and Svay Rieng. The local RFA coverage of Prey Lang and deforestation concerns are echoed internationally as U.S.-based NPR Radio is now running a two-part series on the relationship between China’s need for raw materials and the exploitation of Cambodia’s resources, specifically destruction of its forests. The first part of the program, which is set in Prey Lang, can be heard here: www.npr.org/2013/01/29/170580214/as-china-builds-cambodias-forests-fall. Most of the story describes a forest patrol being conducted with CCHR support, and their encounter with a corrupt police officer who, ultimately using armed thugs, turns back the patrollers before they can seize/burn illegally cut luxury wood.
