PLCN Mobilizes Members and Patrols

On September 1, PLCN representatives organized a community network meeting in Kampong Thom’s Sandan District to mobilize membership and discuss plan for forest patrols. There were 57 PLCN members (25 women) participants. The group invited district FA officers and the Sandan Commune chief to participate but they did not attend. On September 2, 29 PLCN members (all men), accompanied by two Spanish reporters, began a three-day forest patrol in Prey Lang bordering Sandan District. PLCN members reported increasing logging following the elections, with Prey Chaep Mouy Community forest (CF) even being logged, with the community forest management committee chair himself involved in the logging. CF members, some of whom also participate in PLCN, have complained to local authorities about this, without action. PLCN also reported that illegal loggers are bringing luxury wood by hand tractor to load on boats at the Siem Bouk stream at Torl, Krobey Mouy, Kas, Anglong Phee and Dung villages. The boats then go onto the Mekong River. Reportedly, the illegal loggers appear to be protected by armed military policeman in collusion with some local authorities and forest authorities.
