New Protected Forests Test Overstretched Ministry

Few weeks ago the Environment Ministry announced that the Cambodian government wants to create nearly 1 million hectares of newly protected forests by the end of the year. This will add nearly a third more land to the portfolio of an agency already struggling to manage the 3.2 million hectares it has the obligation to protect already.
A number of environmental groups – among them Global Witness, a London-based environmental protection group – are sceptical about the abilities of the Ministry to carry out the plan.
