Kampong Thom – PLCN continues mapping project

From December 9 to 11, seven PLCN mappers were joined by members of GNA team at a meeting with the commune chiefs of Kleng and Chhiel Treal. The group collected information documenting 2,704 families from 19 villages. The team also learned about six community forests that had been established by the Sandan District Forestry Administration with the support of RECOFTC, Pact and Mlup Baitong. The team discovered that each of the CFs has been decimated to near destruction, either by migrants from Kampong Cham or ELCs granted to Try Pheap Company and Gold Foison Cambodia. The former CFs have been converted to plantations or are being used for traditional agricultural activities. Affected communities reported that the CFs began to be cut down in the wake of student volunteers visiting the area in 2012 to measure land under a government titling program.
